House of Daviot, Aberdeenshire

This former hospital, built in the 1800’s, had been renovated and converted into a spectacular family home…unfortunately with equally spectacular heating bills! The large main stairwell presented a specific issue as it acted like a chimney for cold air which made family gatherings somewhat uncomfortable…The current owner contacted us and asked what we could do. The fabric of the building was to be retained; skirtings, cornicework and panelling maintained throughout. With the ingress of cold air particularly evident, we suggested a full floor, roof and wall treatment…We phased the work in conjunction with other trades undertaking plumbing and joinery work, and completed the project over a period of six weeks.

The first stage was the underfloor installation, which we could undertake with minimal disruption. Access was straightforward with a good solum depth, and particular attention was made to perimeter walls. As well as eliminating air infiltration via the floorboards, the heat losses in the walls are beginning to be addressed where there is now less draw. Secondly the roof was tackled…a complex apex and mono-pitched roof structure but again with relatively good clear access. Applying spray-foam to the wall head where possible again reduced heat losses in the walls. The third and final phase was to treat the walls; a combination of spray and pour formulas, 13mm holes and pipe installation where appropriate…every tool in the installers armoury was utilised to ensure that the Icynene got to where it was needed.

After each phase the client remarked on the noticeable improvement in thermal performance of the building…and when the roof was completed the neighbours of adjoining properties were intrigued as to why the snow had disappeared from their roofs, but remained at the House of Daviot!

All in all, a hugely successful installation in a stunning property.
