Old Bank House, Dufftown

After receiving a phone call we surveyed a large old traditionally built granite built Bank House - this house was originally built for the manager of a bank, and the bank counter was to the rear of the building. This was practically impossible to heat to a comfortable level, and as the clients were about to start renovations, this was the ideal time to bring up the efficiencies of the house. Firstly we were asked to look at the possibility of insulating the walls, as the client thought that this was where all the heat loss was. We confirmed that this was possible, by injecting Icynene behind the existing lath and plaster, but explained that the largest heat loss was most likely through the roof. So we surveyed the roof area, and we found the usual layer of glass wool insulation, there was also rooms in the roof space to part of the house, we therefore suggested that the roof was insulated on the underside of the sarking boards to create a warm roof. This was all agreed with the client and an estimate submitted, followed by an instruction to proceed.
We contacted the clients following winter and asked how they found the insulation performing and if they could write a short testimonial-
"We have nothing but praise for the Icynene insulation and the service and installation of it by Kishorn.
The large attic area was always very cold - and usually colder than outside. It is now very warm in the attics, despite the fact there is no heating appliances in this space. The Icynene keeps out the strong winds and the warmth coming up from the house below is "saved". We are also impressed by the breathable qualities of the product. There is no damp in the attics at all.
We believe that Icynene is very good value for money when compared to other forms of insulation. In our case we believe that our heating bills are around half due to the Icynene. And we live in an old granite house.
The pre-installation advice and quote was excellent and fair. The two gentlemen who came and fitted the insulation were polite, tidy and efficient."
Overall, we are extremely happy with the product and installation and would recommend its use.
Icynene can be applied to the underside of the roof creating a Warm Roof, this can only be done with Icynene due to its extremely breathable, but hydrophobic open cell nature, (see the BBA certificate) It can be quite amazing how much of an improvement this can make to traditional house.
